ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND TOTAL PHENOLICS IN SELECTED FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND GRAIN PRODUCTS

Abstract no :  3-1...4-SV-360 Author(s) :   (Food Research program, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Pacific Agri-Food Research Center, Summerland, British Columbia VOH IZO, Canada) Address :  Velioglu, Y.S.; Mazza, G.; Gao, L.; Oomah, B.D Source :  , J. of Agricultural & Food Chemistry, v.46(10): p.4113-7, 1998 Title :  ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND TOTAL PHENOLICS IN SELECTED FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND GRAIN PRODUCTS Abstract :      The antioxidant activities and total phenolics of 28 plant products, including sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, wheat germ, buckwheat, and several fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants were determined. The total phenolic content, determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, varied from 169 to 10548 mg/100 g of dry product. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract evaluated according to the beta-carotene bleaching method expressed as AOX (deltalog A170/min), AA (percent inhibition relative to control), ORR (oxidation rate ratio), and AAC (anti

GERMINATED BARLEY FOODSTUFF IMPROVES CONSTIPATION INDUCED BY LOPERAMIDE IN RATS.

Author(s) :  . (Applied Bioresearch Center, Corporate Research and Development Division Kirin Brewery Company Limited, Miyaharacho 3, Takasaki, Gunma  370-1295, Japan), Address :  Kannuchi,0.; Hitomi, Y.; Agata, K.; Nakamura, T.; Fushiki, T Source :   Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry, v. 62(9): p. 1788-1790, 1998 Title :  GERMINATED BARLEY FOODSTUFF IMPROVES CONSTIPATION INDUCED BY LOPERAMIDE IN RATS. Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was significantly higher in the GBF-fed rats tha

DIETARY ANTIOXIDANTS-NATURAL DEFENCE AGAINST DISEASE

Abstract no :  3-1...4-SV-365 Author(s) :   (Bhaba Atomic Research Center, Trombay, Mumbai 400 845, Maharashtra, India) Address :  Variyar, P.S.: Venkatachalam, S.R.; Ramesh Chander; Thomas,P. Source :  Aryavaidyan, v.12(2): p. 149-159, 1999 Title :  DIETARY ANTIOXIDANTS-NATURAL DEFENCE AGAINST DISEASE Abstract :      Vegetables, fruits, spices, cereals, vegetable oils, tea and red wines constitute rich source of  antioxidants such as vitamin E and C, beta-carotene, Iycopene, selenium, flavonoids, etc. Regular intake of these in diet can protect the body against a host of disease and disorders. An update over-views of broad spectrum of dietary antioxidants with respect to their source and disease prevention potential has been provided.

ISOLATION OF A POTENT MOSQUITO REPELLENT FROM VITEX NEGUNDO L. AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF ROTUNDIAL

Abstract no :  3-1...4-SV-366 Author(s) :   (Research and Development Centre, E.I.D parry (India) Ltd., 145, Devanahalli Road, Bangalore 560 049 Karnataka, India) Address :  Amancharla, P.K.; Muthuraj, P.S.; Rao, G.V.; Singh, O.V. Source :   Natural Product Sciences, v. 5(2):p. 104-106, 1999 Title :  ISOLATION OF A POTENT MOSQUITO REPELLENT FROM VITEX NEGUNDO L.  AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF ROTUNDIAL Abstract :      The chloroform fraction of the aqueous extract of the fresh leaves of Vitex negundo (NIRGUNDI) by bio-activity guided isolation yielded a pure compound, Rotundial (C9H1202) which has shown potent mosquito repellent activity. Using spectral data (UV, IR, IH & 13C NMR  and MS) its structure has been elucidated. Rotundial showed 94.1 % repellency up to 4th hour and maintained 82 % at 6th hour at application dose of 0.15 mg/sq. cm.

EFFECT OF CERTAIN PLANT EXTRACTS AGAINST THE MOSQUITO, ANOPHELES STEPHENSI LISTON

Abstract no :  3-1...4-SV-367 Author(s) :   (Division of Entomology, Dept. of Zoology, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, TN, India), Address :  Murugan, K.; Jeyabalan, D. Source :  Current science, v. 76(5): p. 631-633, 1998 Title :  EFFECT OF CERTAIN PLANT EXTRACTS AGAINST THE MOSQUITO, ANOPHELES STEPHENSI LISTON Abstract :      Extracts of leaves of Leucas aspera (DRONAPUSHPI), Ocimum sanctum (TULASI), Azadirachta Indica (NIMBA), pulp of  Allium sativum (LASUNA) and rhizome of  Curcuma longa (HARIDRA) were tested against colonies of Anopheles stephensi.  The results indicate that the extracts of L. aspera  and O. sanctum are highly toxic to the mosquito larvae. These extracts are also deterrent to adult mosquitoes. Further the extracts of TULSI, Wheat and Neem can be used for disinfecting water.

The activities are discussed in reference to the phenolic compounds involved (anthocyanins, flavonols, flavan-3-oils, hydroxy-benezoates, hydroxycinnamates), their antioxidant mechanisms, and potential health effects. Extracts of fresh-grapes inhibited LDL

Butter oxidation and lypolysis were determined by measuring peroxide and acid values respectively. Most of the oils have been found to possess greater anti-hydrolytic effects than commercial preservative such as butylated hydroxyt
