Title : EFFECT OF ISOQUINOLINE ALKALOID, BERBERINE AS AN ADJUVANT DURING CHEMOTHERAPY AND RADIATION THERAPY
Abstract : Berberine was found to be toxic to L 924 cells in culture (IC50= 40 micro g/ml) and to mice when given in acute (LD50=50mg/kg b wt.i.p.) or chronic dosage (LD=15mg/kg b.wt.)/ day /10 day i.p). At non-toxic concentrations berberine was found to inhibit the tumor induced by Dalton’s lymphoma ascites tumor cells. The drug was found to be more active when given intraperitonially. Berberine also potentate therapeutic activity of radiation, cyclophosphomide as well as hyperthermia. In solid tumor volume was found reduced by the berberine. These results indicate the use of berberine as an adjuvant response modifier cancer therapy.
