Title :  PICROLIV  REGULATES LIPID METABOLISM IN PLASMODIUM BERGHEI INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE IN MASTOMYS CAUCHA
Abstract :      Picroliv, the standardized preparation of iridoid glycosides; plcroside-1 and kutkoside, from Picrorhiza kurroa  (KATUKI) protects liver from damage caused by various hepatotoxins including hepatic damage following Plasmodium berghei (P. berghei) infection in Mastomys Caucha (M.Caucha).  The antioxidant effects and membrane stablishing action of picroliv are reported to contribute to its hepatoprotective activity.  Picroliv stimulates hepatic cholesterol-7A-hydroxylase and restores choleretic activity by increasing the biosynthesis and secretion of bile acids in infected animals.  The liver injury is also accompanied by abnormalities of lipid biosynthesis and metabolism which may be reflected in the plasma lipoprotein spectrum.  Present work reports that P. berghel infection in M. Caucha at 10% parasitaemia suppressed plasma PHLA (30%) and LCAT activity (28%) associated with the increase in the levels of lipid and apoprotein components of serum very low density (36-98%) and lowdensitylipoproteins(30-88%)the liver showed increased levels of lipid and protein, inhibition of TG-lipase activity and suppression of receptor mediated catabolism of low density lipoprotein.  Treatment with picroliv (6mg/kg. p.o) simultaneously with infection for two weeks, significantly reactivated the plasma and liver lipolytic enymes, stimulated the binding of 1125 low  density lipoprotein with liver receptor and enhanced the faecal excretion of bile acids.  These resulted in a return of circulatory lipoproteins towards the normal level.

EFFECT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM ROOTS EXTRACT ON SWIMMING PERFORMANCE IN MICE

Abstract no :  4-1..4-DG-240 Author(s) :  Maity, T.K.; Mandal, S.C.; Saha, B.P.; Pal, M Address :  ( Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta 700 032, WB, India) Source :  Phytotherapy Research, v. 14(2): p. 120-121, 2000 Title :  EFFECT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM ROOTS EXTRACT ON SWIMMING PERFORMANCE IN MICE Abstract :      Methanol extract, obtained from the roots of Ocimum sanctum (TULASI ) at a dose of 400 mg/kg, i.p. increased the swimming time suggesting a central nervous system stimulant and/or antistress activity. The effect produced by the extract was comparable to that of desipramine, an antidepressant drug.

GERMINATED BARLEY FOODSTUFF IMPROVES CONSTIPATION INDUCED BY LOPERAMIDE IN RATS.

Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was signi...

The total phenolic content, determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, varied from 169 to 10548 mg/100 g of dry product. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract evaluated according to the beta-carotene bleaching method expressed as AOX (deltalog A170/min), AA (percent inhibition relative to control), OR...
