Title :  LIVER REGENERATION IN RATS AFTER PARTIAL HEPATECTOMY: INFLUENCE OF PICROLIV
Abstract :      Regeneration of the liver after partial hepatectomy is one of the most popular and frequently used model for the study of cell grwoth and cell differentiation.  Two stages are important in the study of regeneration.  The initial stage, when the cell switch to the proliferating pool and the end stage when the cells return to quiescent Go-phase.  The initial stage is characterized by an increase in number of cell divisions and of all metabolic processes.  The last stage during which mitotic activity decreases to normal levels, has not been throughly investigated.  In the present study the drug metaboilizing  cornponents were estimated during the end stage of liver regeneration i.e. between days 4-30 after 70% removal of this organ and the oral effect of hepatoprotective agent picrollv (6.0 mg/kg) was investigated on those componets.  Microsomal aniline hydroxylase and aminopyrine demethylase, activities was maximally decreased on day 20. Decline in glutathione level and glutathiones transferase activity was evident maximally on day 10.  Decline in cytochrome p 450 content paralleled to that of aniline hydroxylase/aminopyrine demethylase.  Picroliv extracted from KATUKI showed maximum protection in hepatic glutathione content followed by glutathione-s-transferease, aniline hydroxylase, aminopyrine demethylase and cytochrome P450.  These results confirm the antioxidant potential of picroliv and provide additional evidence that it stimulates liver regeneration.

The effect produced by the extract was comparable to that of desipramine, an antidepressant drug.

GERMINATED BARLEY FOODSTUFF IMPROVES CONSTIPATION INDUCED BY LOPERAMIDE IN RATS.

Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was signi...

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND TOTAL PHENOLICS IN SELECTED FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND GRAIN PRODUCTS

The total phenolic content, determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, varied from 169 to 10548 mg/100 g of dry product. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract evaluated according to the beta-carotene bleaching method expressed as AOX (deltalog A170/min), AA (percent inhibition relative to control), OR...
