Title :  INFLUENCE OF AZADIRACHTA INDICA (NEEM) LEAF EXTRACT ON THE IMMUNOTOXICITY OF STRESS AND XENOBIOTICS IN EXPERIMETAL ANIMALS.
Abstract :      A veriety of environmental stressors are known to influence immune function and the present study evaluated the effects of leaf extracts of Azadirachta indica (NIMBA) (Al, Neem) on the immunomodulation induced by restraint stress (RS) and the insecticide, DDT, in rats and mice, In rats immunized with sheep RBC (SRBC), RC (1h/dayx5) exposure suppressed the anti-SRBC antibody titres, and inhinited the increase in footpad thickness after SRBC challenge in mice.  Both these effects were attenuated after oral Al (100mg/kg, x5days) inhibited  the antibody response and suppressed the leucocyte migration inhibition, in tetanus toxoid immunized rats. Al pretreatment (x 6 Weeks) also appreciably   reversed the DDT induced changes in the tests for humoral and cell mediated immunity.  In the interaction studies, prior RS exposure clearly potentiated the otherwise insignificant effect of a subthreshould DDT (200 ppm x 4 weeks)  exposure on the immuno response and this was also reversed by Al pretreatment.  The results indicate that both short and long term Al treatments attenuate the immunotoxicity of environmental/xenobiotic stressors and highlight the immunopotentiating and adaptogenic effect of this indigenous medicinal plant.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON HYPOCHOLESTEROLAEMIC EFFECT OF ALLICIN, WHOLE GERMINATED SEEDS OF BENGAL GRAM AND GUGGULIPID OF GUM GUGGLU

Abstract no :  4-1..4-DG-205 Author(s) :  Ghorai, M.; Mandal, S.C.; Pal, M.; Pal, S.P.; Saha, B.P Address :  (Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta 700 032, WB, India) Source :  Phytotherapy Research, v. 14(3): p. 200-202, 2000 Title :  A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON HYPOCHOLESTEROLAEMIC EFFECT OF ALLICIN, WHOLE GERMINATED SEEDS OF BENGAL GRAM AND GUGGULIPID OF GUM GUGGLU Abstract :      The daily use of allicin (active principle from Allium sativum (LASUNA)) and whole germinated Bengal gram (Cicer arietinum (CHANAKA)) seeds for 8 weeks led to a significant decrease in serum cholesterol levels in normal volunteers with no side effects. Guggulipid (gum of Commiphora mukul (GUGGULU)) therapy, significantly (p less than 0.001) reduced the mean serum cholesterol level. Allicin treatment significantly reduced the mean serum cholesterol level. The serum cholesterol value was reduced d...

Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was signi...
