Title : QUALITY CONTROL OF ASHWAGANDHA IN AYURVEDIC FORMULATIONS
Abstract : Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (ASVAGANDHA)) is used in various Ayurvedic formulations for the treatment of rheumatism, gout, hypertension, nervine and skin diseases. It is a strength and vigor-promoting drug. A method is proposed for its quality control in Ayurvedic formulations. 100 mg of the powdered, dried crude drug was extracted with 25 ml of acetone-pet, ether solvent mixture (1:1) in soxhiet extractor at 60-70 degree C. The extract was evaporated on water bath. The residue is dissolved in ethanol (95 percent) and the volume is made up to 25 ml with ethanol. The procedure is applied to 200 mg, 300 mg, 400 mg, and 500 mg of crude drug. All the ethonolic solutions thus prepared were observed under UV region of spectrophotometer at 330 nm. A standard curve was prepared to express the absorbance in relation to mg of dried crude drug. The method is applied to Ayurvedic formulation of Ashwagandha. The amount of the crude drug present in formulation is calculated. The proposed method was found to be accurate and precise from results obtained. The method was developed on the basis of presence of active principle withaferin A.
