Title :  LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS PERTAINING TO QUANTIFICATION OF HEROIN AND OTHER DRUGS E.G. OPIUM AND CANNABIS ETC
Abstract :      Brown sugar, the most widely abused drug is derived from opium extract or crude morphine. It contains heroin along with other opium alkaloids. Several chromatographic procedures have been described for the analysis of heroinin illicit preparations. Capillary g.c has proved to be a valuable tool for the analysis of the complex mixture. The high efficiency of the fused silica capillary column results in the tall narrow peaks which reduces determination limits. The larger variation in percentage of active ingredient of narcotic drugs is attributed to the degradation of the active ingredients due to moisture etc. In brown sugar, heroin degrades to monoacetyl morphine and finally to morphine. In cannabis, THC, degrades to cannabinol. In view of this its difficult to fix the purity of the active ingredient of the narcotic drugs under NDPS act owing to uncontrolled parameters (atmospheric conditions, humidity, moisture etc). This may cause unnecessary complication in the trial courts dealing with these cases-under NDPS act.

EFFECT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM ROOTS EXTRACT ON SWIMMING PERFORMANCE IN MICE

Abstract no :  4-1..4-DG-240 Author(s) :  Maity, T.K.; Mandal, S.C.; Saha, B.P.; Pal, M Address :  ( Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta 700 032, WB, India) Source :  Phytotherapy Research, v. 14(2): p. 120-121, 2000 Title :  EFFECT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM ROOTS EXTRACT ON SWIMMING PERFORMANCE IN MICE Abstract :      Methanol extract, obtained from the roots of Ocimum sanctum (TULASI ) at a dose of 400 mg/kg, i.p. increased the swimming time suggesting a central nervous system stimulant and/or antistress activity. The effect produced by the extract was comparable to that of desipramine, an antidepressant drug.

GERMINATED BARLEY FOODSTUFF IMPROVES CONSTIPATION INDUCED BY LOPERAMIDE IN RATS.

Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was signi...

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND TOTAL PHENOLICS IN SELECTED FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND GRAIN PRODUCTS

The total phenolic content, determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, varied from 169 to 10548 mg/100 g of dry product. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract evaluated according to the beta-carotene bleaching method expressed as AOX (deltalog A170/min), AA (percent inhibition relative to control), OR...
