Title :  HYPOGLYCEMIC ACTIVITY OF COSCINIUM FENESTRATUM (GAERTN.) COLEBR
Abstract :      Decoction of the stems of Coscinium fenestratum (DARUHARIDRA BH.) was fed to fasting rabbits in order to detect its potential hypoglycemic activity. Coscinium in 4g/kg body weight showed the maximum potency of 73.75 percent as percentage of tolbutamide at the 5th hour of feeding. Coscinium in 2g/kgand 8g/kg did not show any significant result. In G.T.T. studies in rabbit, Coscinium in 4g/kg and also in 8g/kg bodyweight showed a pattern of activity which is comparable to that of tolbutamide 250 mg/kg body weight. On alloxan induced diabetic rabbits Coscinium in 2g/kg, 4g/kg and8g/kg body weight exhibited a significant hypoglycaemic activity. This result was at 5th hour for 2g/kg dose, both at3rd and 5th hour for 4g/kg dose and at 1st hour for 8g /kgbody weight dose while for tolbutamide it was not significant statistically.

Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was signi...
