Abstract :       The fundamentals of Ayurveda for the preparation of proprietary medicine are based on the following factors: Principal and main drug used in the combination; helping and associate drugs to help the main drug; balancing drugs to keep balance over dosha and dhatu and other factors of the body in order to make it a holistic preparation; preservative drugs. The principles have been exemplified by Chyavanprash where Emblica officinalis (AAMALAKI) is the main drug and 34 other drugs including DASHAMUL, ASHTAVARGA, etc; are helping and associate drugs to help main drug. PRAKSHEP DRAVYAs are balancing drugs to keep balance over dosha dhatu and other factors of the body in order to make it a holistic preparation. Oil, ghee, and sugar play the role of preservative drugs.

Guggulipid (gum of Commiphora mukul (GUGGULU)) therapy, significantly (p less than 0.001) reduced the mean serum cholesterol level. Botanically, Brihati is identified as Solarium indicum while Kantakari as Solanum surattense (KANTAKARI). In this study water decoction of Brihati and Kantakari were prepared and studied to evaluate their efficacy in the patients of Shvasa (bronchial asthma) and Kasa (cough). Results of study suggest that the effect of Kantakari decoction was better than Brihati decoction on different clinical parameters like dyspnoea, cough, daily bouts of asthma per week, frequency of asthmatic attacks

CITRAL: A CYTOTOXIC PRINCIPLE ISOLATED FROM THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS AGAINST P388 LEUKAEMIA CELLS.

Title :  CITRAL: A CYTOTOXIC  PRINCIPLE ISOLATED FROM THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS AGAINST P388 LEUKAEMIA CELLS. Abstract :      Cymbopogon citratus (BHUSTRINA) is described as pungent, bitter, sharp and hot in Ayurveda.  It is used in fever, vomiting and rheumatism.  The essential oil obtained from C. citratus  and its isolated principle viz., citral have been tested for cytotoxicity against   p388 leukaemia cells.  The cytotoxicity of citral, IC50 against p388 mouse leukaemic cells was 71 micro g/ml. This is the first report on cytotoxicity of citral and indicates its possible exploitation as a pesticidal and chemotherapeutic agent.
