Title :  MUCUNA PRURIENS DECREASES SEXUAL ACTIVITY IN FEMALE RATS.
Abstract :      Mucuna pruriens (MP) (Kapikcchu) seed powder 3g. containing 100 mg L-dopa (LD) showed a more significant inhibitory effect than 100 mg LD on sexual behaviour in sexually receptive female rats.  The females showed rejection and exhibited decreased lordosis when males attempted to mount. The index of rejections indicated as a significant decrease in lordosis quotient with a corresponding increase in rejection quoteint.  The same animals on treatment with water a week earlier or later accepted the male without any rejection.  The results indicate that while both LD & MP inhibited sexual behaviour in females, the inhibitory effect of MP was more than that of LD indicating the presence of other constitutent in MP contributing to this effect.

EFFECT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM ROOTS EXTRACT ON SWIMMING PERFORMANCE IN MICE

Abstract no :  4-1..4-DG-240 Author(s) :  Maity, T.K.; Mandal, S.C.; Saha, B.P.; Pal, M Address :  ( Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta 700 032, WB, India) Source :  Phytotherapy Research, v. 14(2): p. 120-121, 2000 Title :  EFFECT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM ROOTS EXTRACT ON SWIMMING PERFORMANCE IN MICE Abstract :      Methanol extract, obtained from the roots of Ocimum sanctum (TULASI ) at a dose of 400 mg/kg, i.p. increased the swimming time suggesting a central nervous system stimulant and/or antistress activity. The effect produced by the extract was comparable to that of desipramine, an antidepressant drug.

Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was signi...

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND TOTAL PHENOLICS IN SELECTED FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND GRAIN PRODUCTS

The total phenolic content, determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, varied from 169 to 10548 mg/100 g of dry product. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract evaluated according to the beta-carotene bleaching method expressed as AOX (deltalog A170/min), AA (percent inhibition relative to control), OR...
