Title : MODULATION OF SPECIFIC AND NON-SPECIFIC IMMUNE RESPONSE BY OCIMUM SANCTUM
Abstract : Ocimum sanctum (TULASI) a traditional medicinal plant helps to create conditions favourable for the host defence mainly through the augmentation of humoral as well as cell mediated immunity. Besides these effects, O.sanctum (AEOS) strengthens the biological activities and is used as an adaptogen against stressed conditions. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of O.sanctum on immune system. It was observed that oral administration of aqueous extract of O.sanctum enhanced the antibody production in stressed rats, when compared to control. Immunological defects which are connected with the CNS stress model was used in order to suppress the helper cell, to increase the suppressor effect and to reduce the antibody titre. The results of the study have suggested that the continued employment of O.sanctum, which diversely affect humoral and cellular immunity will contribute to ameliorate the suppressive effect created by stressed conditions and cytotoxic drug. In conclusion the findings of this study imply that oral administration of O.sanctum can cause the restoration of the humoral response in immunosuppressive state thereby making them protective from infections.
