Title : GUIDELINES FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF HERBAL MEDICINES
Abstract : According to Expert Committee (pharmaceutical), guideline is given to define basic criteria for the evaluation of quality, safety, and efficacy of herbal medicines and thereby to assist national regulatory authorities and other similar authorities. These include, pharmaceutical assessment, crude plant material botanical definition, genus, species, authority, plant preparations, finished product, stability, safety assessment, toxicological studies, documentation of safety based on experience. Assessment of efficacy such as activity, evidence required to support indications, combination product and intended use, viz., product information for the consumer, advertisement and promotion. Hence, the effective regulation and control of herbal medicines moving in international commerce requires close liaison between national institutions that are able to keep all aspects of production and use of herbal medicines.
