Title : EFFECT OF GINGER ON CISPLATIN INDUCED DELAY IN GASTRIC EMPTYING IN RATS
Abstract : Cisplatin causes nausea, vomiting and slowing in gastric emptying. We have demonstrated antiemetic effect of ginger acetone and ethanolic extracts against cislatin induced emesis in dogs. In the present study effect of ginger (ARDRAKA) extracts and ginger juice was investigated in cisplatin induced delay in gastric emptying. Wistar rats of either sex Weighing 150-200 g were used. The animals were deprived of food 24 hr prior to the experiment. Cisplatin 10 mg/kg, i.p. was administreted 30 min before the test meal. After 30 min of test meal administration, rats were sacrificed for determination of percent gastric emptying. Acetone and alcoholic extract of ginger in different doses (100,200 and 500 mg/kg, p.o.) and ginger juice at the doses of 1 and 2 ml/kg, p.o. were administered before 60 min of cisplatin administration. Cisplatin 10 mg/kg, i.p. produced significant delay in gastric emptying to 28.79% as compared to vehicle treated group 81.20% Acetone, 50% ethanolic extract and ginger juice produced dose dependent reversal of cisplatin induced delay in gastric emptying in dose dependent manner. The acetone extract and ginger juice produced better reversal, however, both were less effective than to 5-HT3 receptors antagonist-ondanserron. The findings suggest that ginger may help in improving the gastrointestinal symptoms of cisplatin.
