Title :  BIOCHEMICAL  STUDIES ON COMBINED EFFECTS OF  GARLIC  [ALLIUM  SATIVUM  LINN]  AND GINGER [ZINGIBER OFFICINALE ROSE]  IN  ALBINO RATS
Abstract :      Adult  male  rats of wistar strain were fed  diets  containg (w/w)  2%  garlic  (group  2),  0.5%  ginger  (group  3)  and a combination of garlic(LASUNA) plus ginger (ARDRAKA) (group 4) for  4  weeks  to  study  their  effects  on  serum   biochemical parameters. A significant increase in body weight was observed in all groups except that fed ginger (gr.3). A significant  decrease in  blood  glucose,  serum total cholestrol  and  serum  alkaline phosphatase   were   found  in all groups, where as serum triglyserides were decreased significantly only in grop 4.  Serum HDL-cholestrol was significantly increased  only in groups 3 & 4. However,  HDL-cholestrol, VLDL-cholestrol and  atherogenic  index were  significantly decreased in animals fed with combination  of the two, compared to ginger/garlic alone. Hence a combination  of garlic and ginger is more effective in reducing blood glucose and serum lipids.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON HYPOCHOLESTEROLAEMIC EFFECT OF ALLICIN, WHOLE GERMINATED SEEDS OF BENGAL GRAM AND GUGGULIPID OF GUM GUGGLU

Abstract no :  4-1..4-DG-205 Author(s) :  Ghorai, M.; Mandal, S.C.; Pal, M.; Pal, S.P.; Saha, B.P Address :  (Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta 700 032, WB, India) Source :  Phytotherapy Research, v. 14(3): p. 200-202, 2000 Title :  A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON HYPOCHOLESTEROLAEMIC EFFECT OF ALLICIN, WHOLE GERMINATED SEEDS OF BENGAL GRAM AND GUGGULIPID OF GUM GUGGLU Abstract :      The daily use of allicin (active principle from Allium sativum (LASUNA)) and whole germinated Bengal gram (Cicer arietinum (CHANAKA)) seeds for 8 weeks led to a significant decrease in serum cholesterol levels in normal volunteers with no side effects. Guggulipid (gum of Commiphora mukul (GUGGULU)) therapy, significantly (p less than 0.001) reduced the mean serum cholesterol level. Allicin treatment significantly reduced the mean serum cholesterol level. The serum cholesterol value was reduced d...

Abstract :      The effects of germinated barley (YAVA) foodstuff (GBF) derived from the aleurone and scutellum fractions of germinated barley low-lignified hemicellulose were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats with constipation induced by Loperamide by addition to the diet (2 mg/kg body weight). Bowel movements were higher in the GBF-fed rats than in the cellulose-fed rats used as control. Fecal water content was also higher in the GBF-fed rats. The concentration of short chain fatty acids in cecal content, especially butyrate, was signi...
